Assessment
of the NGOZI
Branch
 |
The
fifth step of our reports on the INTERBANK BURUNDI distribution
network: NGOZI Branch.
|
1.
Background
Early 1996,
Interbank Burundi is in its fourth year of operation and its commercial
dynamism already reknown in Bujumbura where it is present on all
the important client sectors.
A year before,
the Meridien Biao Bank was bankrupt and its Ngozi Branch has closed
down, following which a big number of its client, supported by the
provincial authorities, to request Interbank Burundi to open its
Branch at ngozi.
It is in such
an environment, on the basis of a client portfolio of nearly BIF300M
and its option of bringing its services closer to the clients, that
the Bank soon opened its first branch, at Ngozi, in May 1996.
Indeed the market
was prosperous; the town of Ngozi had at that time only one banking
branch, the BCB one, in spite of its rapid development.
2. Output
Interbank Burundi
branch of Ngozi is today operational since six years ago with a
financial and commercial output widely beyond the most optimist
forecasts.
First, at the
commercial level, the Ngozi branch is undoubtedly one of the most
important local banking branches with nearly 2,500 accounts opened
since its opening and a deposit portfolio amounting to about a billion
francs.
At the financial
level, the Ngozi branch has reached the break-even point since the
first operational year and is currently yielding a near annual return
of about BIF 120M.
 |
This rapid
development has brought it to the level of a "real Bank"
within the network so much so that with the beginning of the
year 2000, the Ngozi branch has moved into a new wider building
which fits with its level of operations.
|
3. The branch management
|
Since
July 2000, the Ngozi branch is run by Mr Willy NIKOBAMYE,
a young university graduate who joined the Bank in August
1996. Appointed since he was recruited at the Visa section
of which he quickly became responsible, Mr Willy NIKOBAMYE
has shortly worked at the International Banking department
before he joined the Ngozi Branch.
|

|
Aged 34, Mr
Willy NIKOBAMYE is married and father of 2 children.
