Assessment of the GITEGA BRANCH

Sixth leg of our reports on the Interbank Burundi distribution network: Gitega Branch

1. Background

Launched with the establishment of the Ngozi branch and another one at Kirundo a year after, the geographical expansion of our distribution network was pursued at Bujumbura during two years before spreading to the centre of the country, at Gitega, in August 2000.

With a three-fold objective :

  • to ensure the national ancoring of our distribution network ;
  • to serve as a banking intermediary for commercial transactions between Bujumbura, Ngozi, Kirundo and Gitega as well as the neighbouring centres : Karuzi, Ruyigi, Rutana, Muramvya and Mwaro;
  • and finally, constitute a new breeding ground for the Bank's resources.

As a matter of fact, the town of Gitega is an important administrative and commercial centre, being at the same time a development turning point for the central and eastern regions.

2. Output

Gitega Interbank Burundi Branch is operational since two years ago, almost to the day, and the financial and commercial results are rather satisfactory.

In the commercial field, with nearly 1,600 accounts opened in two years and a deposit portfolio of more than one billion francs, Gitega branch has become one of the most important local bank's branches.

Thus, the branch holds slightly more than 80 % of the client portfolio of the central market of Gitega of which it contributed to relaunch after the fire of september 2001

Official Opening of Gitega Branch: September 2nd, 2000

3. The branch management

Since its start, the Gitega branch is managed by Mr Jean Charles NTIYANKUNDIYE, a university graduate who proved able in inter-agency banking operations.

After he joined the Bank in October 1995, he was appointed to various operations, at the Headquaters, at the computer section and at the Quartier Asiatique Branch, before a short passage at Ngozi as the Manager of Ngozi Branch in February 2000.

Aged 36, married and father of 2 children, Mr Jean-Charles NTIYANKUNDIYE is member of the tennis club of Gitega of which he is treasurer.
