Assessment of the JABE BRANCH

As we come to the end of our reports on Interbank Burundi distribution network, here is our story on the Jabe branch, the last born of the network.

1. Background

In 2001, Interbank Burundi started a new approach to its corner policy, i.e. expanding its operations farther, by availing its services and decentralizing them, in investing in the ' Home bank" and boasting the development of local collectivities and communities.

This approach was launched whith the establishment of the Buyenzi Branch at the end of August 2001.

Five months later, the branch recorded so much success with the opening of an average 20 accounts per day.

The new approach will then be pursued with the establishment of Jabe branch in January 2002.

Like Buyenzi, Jabe area, a populated quarter of Bwiza zone, enjoys market infrastructures serving three high density administrative entities, notably Jabe, Bwiza and Nyakabiga, not to mention Ngagara which is so close to Jabe.

Hence, the three local entities, like Buyenzi, are both residential and commercial with a dominant business component.

In addition, with the various business and handcraft activities, the three areas constitute supply sources for a rich and varied informal sector where we have an important number of clients.

Therefore, in order to better serve our clients and strengthen our new approach while establishing our branches, we inaugurated Jabe branch on January 25th 2002.

2. Output

Nine months after its establishment, Jabe branch is progressively famous in its Bwiza neighborhood.

Hence, even before the rehabilitation of Jabe market, this branch has recorded almost a total of 450 new accounts adding to our former business relations in the area and fifty credit files are lodged in its records.

The business portfolio should therefore grow up rapidly once the new Jabe market becomes operational.

Official Opening of Jabe Branch: January 25th, 2002

3. The branch management

Since its establishment, Jabe branch is managed by Mr Jean Marie NKANIRA , a young University graduate who joined the Bank in December 1995.

A laureate of the Higher Institute of Commerce, Accounting Section, Mr Jean Marie NKANIRA was first appointed at the Local Banking Transactions Section of which he quickly became responsible before he was appointed Head of Brarudi Interbank Cash-Desk in October 1998 for three years.

Promoted to the position of Deputy Manager of Buyenzi branch while it was launched in 2001, Mr Jean Marie NKANIRA made proof of a big sense of responsibility and a great capacity of analysis, following which he was appointed Manager of Jabe Branch in January 2002.

Mr Jean Marie NKANIRA is well integrated in the sporting milieu of Bujumbura, particulary in a club called " Les Amis de la Montagne ".

Aged 34, Mr NKANIRA is married and father of 2 children.
